Teaching Recount Text By Making A Simple Digital Storytelling

The rapid development of information and communication technology (ICT) is challenge to be faced by the education nowadays. The integration of computer-mediated communication with multimedia courseware, electronic libraries, and data bases has led to the emergence of a whole new kind of educational experience, namely e-learning or networked learning (Naidu, 2005:1). In language learning especially English, the concept which called e-learning gets positive response from the students because the text media which often they get is boring. The e-learning concept is considered to be more interactive and easier to deliver information in class.

Although the information and communication technology (ICT) is developing very fast, the instructor still have dufficulties in operating it. The school may have completed each class of the technological tool like computer, lcd projector, etc. But just several teachers can use them well. Sadik (2008:488) believe that many teachers worldwide are not able to adopt technology for teaching and learning task, and the gap between technology presence in schools and its effective use is too wide. The use of digital media will not be successful if the teacher are not able to operate it.

A digital media that should be applied in classroom is digital storytelling. The digital storytelling is a relatively new term which describes the new practice of ordinary people who use digital tools to tell their ‘story’. Sadik (2008:490) believe that digital story telling is the social practice of telling stories that makes use of low-cost digital cameras, non-linear authoring tools and computers to create short multimedia stories. The teacher can use digital storytelling to support students’ learning by encouraging them to organize and express their ideas and knowledge in an individual and meaningful way (Sadik, 2008:490). So it will be interesting media to apply in classroom.

There are many advantages of using digital storytelling in education. Sadik (2008:490) suggested the advantages of storytelling : (1) to provide more variation than traditional methods in currrent practice; (2) to personalize learning experience; (3)  to make explanation or the practicing of certain topics more compelling; (4) to create real life situation in an easy and cheaper way; and (5) to enhance the involment of students in the learning process. So by those advantages, the researcher belives that digital storytelling will interest the students and enhance their skills especially in speaking.

This is a simple Digital Storytelling that I have made in the second semester of STKIP PGRI Bangkalan.
